US 4 Exits

The westernmost 19 or so miles of US 4 is a "freeway to nowhere". There may have been plans for an interstate highway, likely numbered as I-92, which would have run from I-87 near Glens Falls NY along the US 4 corridor to Portland ME. The part from Exit 6 to US 7 was built later (opened Nov 1986), long after any I-92 plans were cancelled. Since there is an at-grade railroad crossing with a traffic light on this portion, it is not interstate-standard, while the older portion is.

There is a "ghost" trumpet ramp system just after Exit 1, that is, ramps were graded but never paved or used. This would have been the real Exit 1 if NY had built their piece, since the current Exit 1 is an ordinary intersection just before the 4 lane section starts.
