I-189 Exits
OK, this page is sort of a joke since I-189 is only a little over a mile in
length, and its only "exits" are its two ends. But there were once grander
plans. In the 1970s there were plans for a full beltway around Burlington,
from what is now the end of I-189 along the waterfront, along what is now SR 127
back to I-89. As recently as 1994 I-189 was still planned to be extended to
downtown between Pine and Battery Sts. Wrangling over cleanup of the Pine St.
Barge Canal Superfund site (into which coal tar was dumped before World War II)
held this up.
Thanks to Garrett Wollman for this information.
Beyond Exit 1 there's an additional half-mile or so of interstate highway that
was built but never opened to traffic. It remains closed and abandoned today.
