Circumferential Highway

Circumferential Highway Termini

The Nashua-Hudson Circumferential Highway is a controvertial project that has been cancelled and un-cancelled a few times. Right now only the southernmost portion is built, going from US 3 Exit 2 in Nashua to NH 3-A in Hudson. Work should start soon on its northern end, going from a future Everett Turnpike Exit 9 in Merrimack to NH 3-A in Litchfield, then continuing on to NH 102 then to NH 111 in Hudson. The final portion, from NH 111 to NH 3-A in Hudson may never be built. The Circumferential Highway has no route number at this time.

West End, US 3/Everett Turnpike, Nashua

This three level stack interchange on US 3/the Everett Turnpike Exit 2 in Nashua is the Circumferential Highway's west (actually south) end.

Exit 2 from US 3 (Everett Turnpike) northbound to Circumferential Highway.

Exit 2 from US 3 (Everett Turnpike) southbound. Note that the sign says TO 111 even though the Circ. Highway doesn't go there yet. (ever?)

East End, at Route 3-A, Hudson

Current east end of the Circumferential Highway at NH 3-A in Hudson. If the whole thing ever gets built, it will go through the field in the right background. This intersection is configured like a partial SPUI interchange in that the left turning traffic meets at a single three phase light, with room for a possible freeway overpass between the lanes (future ramps).

Another look as you approach the current east end.

Zero milemarker on east end facing westbound. Since the marker uses the Everett Turnpike logo and uses a ramp designation rather than a direction on the top line, this highway is considered a long set of Everett Turnpike ramps rather than a separate highway. This particular marker has two, maybe three goofs. First, the Everett Turnpike logo is blue, and it should be green. (The similar Spaulding Turnpike logo is blue, but this one does read Everett Turnpike). Second, exact multiples of a mile on other markers read MILE N on the bottom two lines. The format used is what's used for intermediate 2/10s mile marker. The small photo shows a correct mile marker from another ramp. Third, this marker is a little over 2/10 mile from NH 3-A, which makes me wonder if all the markers westbound are off by 2/10s mile by being posted on the wrong post.

Many thanks to
Dan Moraseski (SPUI) for some of these pictures.
